About one fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions in Europe are produced as a result of the transport of people and goods on streets and roads. The Mercedes-Benz Group is taking deliberate measures to counteract this trend and has made climate protection a core element of its business strategy. Our goal is to make our entire new vehicle fleet CO2 neutral across all stages of the value chain by 2039.
In order to achieve this goal, we are transforming the products and services that are at the heart of our business operations. We are thus creating innovative, noticeably more sustainable solutions in order to live up to our social responsibility and at the same time reinforce people’s trust in the Mercedes-Benz brand. That’s because sustainability is one of the brand promises of Mercedes-Benz.
This principle will continue to drive our actions in the future, not only with regard to our strategic brand decisions but also for our direct contact with customers. We want to enable our customers to experience sustainability at every point of contact with us. We are promoting climate protection with equal ambition in all upstream and downstream phases of the automotive life cycle — from the supply chain and our own manufacturing operations to the use and disposal of the vehicles.
In October 2020 Mercedes-Benz AG signed The Climate Pledge. The Climate Pledge, is a voluntary commitment to fulfil the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change ten years earlier than prescribed. Companies are called on to become CO2 neutral by 2040. By joining this initiative we reaffirmed our intention to continue moving systematically towards emission-free mobility and sustainable vehicle production.
In July 2020 Mercedes-Benz AG also became a founding member of the international climate protection initiative Transform to Net Zero, which was launched by Microsoft. Through this membership we have further reinforced our commitment to the goals mentioned above. Nine renowned companies from diverse sectors and countries of origin are pooling their expertise in this initiative. Our shared goal is to improve the framework conditions for the decarbonisation of the economy and society all over the world.
